It also matters more right now than it does in July. As we head into fall the sun sits lower in the sky and the rain picks up, and a hazy, filmy windshield turns that low light into blinding glare. Clean glass is a visibility and safety thing this time of year, not just a looks thing.

Why Your Glass Streaks

Almost every streak you have ever fought comes down to one of these.

The wrong cleaner. Household and ammonia cleaners leave a residue that hazes over, and ammonia can damage tint. A proper automotive glass cleaner is built to clear with no residue.

A dirty towel. If the towel already has product or dust in it, you are just smearing that around on the glass.

Hot glass in the sun. The cleaner flashes and dries before you can wipe it, and that dried product is the streak you are looking at.

Skipping the inside. The film that builds up from off gassing and everyday grime lives on the inside of the glass. That is the haze you see when the sun hits it.

This is the film and streaking you are trying to get rid of. It shows up worst in direct light.

Pick Your Glass Cleaner

Here is the part most people never think about. The right glass cleaner depends on where and how you are working, because it comes down to how fast the product flashes, or dries.

Save Glass For Last

One timing rule before you start. Glass is always the last step of the detail. If you clean it earlier, overspray and residue from everything else, tire dressing, detail sprays, and protectants, drift onto the glass and you end up doing it twice. Finish the rest of the car, then clean the glass.

The Two Towel Method

This is the part that actually gets you streak free, and it is what we run in the shop every single day. Two towels. We use our Look Out glass towels for both.

Towel one is your cleaning towel. Spray the glass cleaner directly onto the towel, load it up, and wipe the glass. Before you wipe the open middle, box in the corners. Hit every edge and corner of the glass first, because that is where product and film like to hide, then wipe the rest.

Towel two is your leveling towel. Give it one light mist, just one, then go back over the glass and level out any streaking. That second pass with a barely damp towel is the whole secret. It clears the last of the haze and leaves the glass genuinely clear.

That is the entire method. Clean with towel one, level with towel two, box your corners every time, and you get glass with no streaks.

Keep your glass towels clean. Here is a streak cause nobody thinks about. If your glass towels were washed with fabric softener, or they are still holding leftover detergent, that residue smears right back onto the glass as you wipe. Wash your glass towels on their own, with a little detergent and no fabric softener, and keep them separate from your dirty wash towels.

Towel one cleans and boxes the corners. Towel two levels out any streaking.

The Inside Is The Same

Do not skip the interior glass, because the haze you see when the sun hits the windshield is almost always film on the inside. The good news is the method does not change. Same two towels, same steps. Clean with towel one, box the corners, then level with towel two.

The only difference is reach. Roll the window down an inch or two so you can get the top edge that hides under the seal, and work the inside of the windshield in sections so you can see what you are leveling. Do the inside every time and the glass stays clear in the sun.

Water Spots And Hard Residue

Sometimes the glass is clean but you still see spots or cloudy patches that will not wipe away. That is not dirt. It is bonded water spots, mineral buildup, or hard residue that has etched into the glass, and a cleaner will not touch it.

For that, use Glass Polish Plus. Work it into the affected areas to polish out the water spots and residue and bring the clarity back.

One honest note. Glass Polish Plus removes water spots and residue, not scratches. Once glass is scratched, it is scratched, and no product removes a scratch from glass. But for spotting, staining, and hard water buildup, this is the fix.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Using a household or ammonia cleaner. They leave residue and ammonia can wreck tint. Use a proper automotive glass cleaner.

Cleaning hot glass with the fast flashing cleaner. In the heat and the sun, reach for Sun Shine so it does not dry before you wipe.

One towel for everything. Without the second leveling towel, you will always be chasing streaks.

Forgetting the inside. The haze you see in the sun is almost always interior film. Do both sides of the glass.

Too much product. A soaked towel smears. Load towel one, and only lightly mist towel two.

Dirty glass towels. If they were washed with fabric softener or still hold detergent, they smear residue right back onto the glass. Wash them clean and skip the softener.

Why does my windshield streak more than the other glass?
The windshield is usually the toughest because it is the hottest. It takes the sun directly, and on hot glass the cleaner flashes and dries almost instantly, especially outdoors, which is exactly what leaves the streaks. On warm glass reach for Sun Shine since it flashes slower. Then lean on the two towel method. Start with clean towels, load up towel one to wipe off the residue, and do one light mist on towel two. That single mist just moistens the towel enough to grab off whatever is left, and that is what pulls it perfectly clear.

Is ammonia bad for window tint?
Yes. Ammonia based cleaners can haze and break down tint over time. Sun Shine and Express are both ammonia free, so they are safe on tinted windows.

How do I clean the inside of my glass?
The exact same way as the outside. Two towels, clean and box the corners with the first, level with the second. Roll the window down an inch to reach the top edge, and work the windshield in sections.

Why is my glass still hazy after I clean it?
First rule out your towels, since fabric softener or leftover detergent in them will smear residue right back on. If your towels are clean and you used the right method and it is still hazy, that is telling you there is harsh residue or water spotting bonded to the glass that a cleaner will not remove. Polish those areas out with Glass Polish Plus, then go back and clean the glass with your normal method. If you are fighting haze or water spots that will not wipe away, that is the fix.

Should I clean my glass first or last?
Last, always. Overspray from tire dressing, detail sprays, and protectants drifts onto glass, so save it for the final step or you will be redoing it.

No. It removes water spots, mineral buildup, and hard residue, but scratches in glass are permanent and no product will take them out.
