How it works

Four steps per wheel

The only rule that matters is not letting it dry on the surface.

Rinse and cool the wheel

Knock off the loose dirt and let the wheel cool to the touch. Work in the shade so nothing flash dries.

Spray one wheel at a time

Cover the face, the barrel, the lug pockets and the spoke gaps. One wheel at a time so it never dries on the surface.

Watch it turn red

That color change is Cool Guy binding with brake dust and embedded iron. That is your dwell time working.

Agitate, rinse, dry

Wheel brush on the face, a smaller brush in the tight spots, then rinse completely and dry to avoid water spots.

If you do not see much red, your wheels just are not carrying much iron yet. That is a good sign.

Questions we get

Why does it turn red?

Because you are watching the iron come off the wheel.

Cool Guy carries an iron chelator, which is a molecule built to grab a metal ion and lock onto it. Brake pads shed microscopic iron particles every time you stop, and those particles embed in the wheel finish. When the chelator finds one, it bonds to the iron and the two form a brand new compound, and that compound is deep red to purple.

So the color is not a dye and it is not damage. It is the dissolved iron itself. The shade runs anywhere from bright red to purple depending on how much iron is coming off and what color your wheels are. Heavy red or purple bleed means the wheels were loaded. Barely any color means they are in good shape.

Is it safe on my wheels?

Yes. It is acid free and pH balanced, and it is compatible with factory, painted, clear coated, polished aluminum, powder coated and ceramic coated wheels. The pH balanced chemistry will not disturb a ceramic coating's bond, which is the whole reason to use it instead of an acid based cleaner.

Can I spray all four wheels at once?

Work one wheel at a time. Cool Guy needs dwell time to react, and if it dries on the surface before you rinse you will see streaks. Spray, agitate, rinse, then move to the next one.
