How To Restore Faded Plastic Trim
How To Restore Faded Plastic Trim
Introduction
Nothing ages a clean car faster than gray, chalky trim. You can wax the paint until it shines, but if the trim is faded, the whole ride still looks tired.
Most people fight it forever because nothing sticks. The usual stuff just masks the gray, then washes off in a week. We are going to show you how to truly condition your trim, bring the deep black back, and pick the right product for how long you want it to last.

Why Your Trim Fades
Exterior trim lives a hard life. It sits in the sun all day, takes the full hit of UV, and never gets the wax or coating your paint gets. Over time that UV dries out the plastic and oxidizes the surface. The chalky gray layer you see is that oxidation. The rough, porous texture makes it look even worse, because it scatters light instead of reflecting it, so faded trim reads flatter than faded paint.
Here is the part most people get wrong. A lot of trim dressings just sit on top and mask the gray with a greasy shine. It looks good in the driveway, then washes off in a week and you are right back where you started. Restoring trim the right way means conditioning the plastic and giving it a layer that actually protects against the UV that caused the fade in the first place.

Pick Your Trim Product
We make three trim products, and the honest way to think about them is a ladder. Same job, restoring and darkening the trim, but very different durability and effort. Pick the one that matches how hands on you want to be.
The trim lineup: Trim Sauce, Trim Shield, and Beadlock Trim
Want the easy, affordable one you top up often? Reach for Trim Sauce. It is a water based gel that rejuvenates the plastic and brings back deep, rich color in minutes, on black, gray, or tan trim. Wipe it on, let it soak, wipe off what did not absorb. The tradeoff is durability. Because it is water based, it breaks down with water over time, so this is your maintenance product. It shines when you keep it topped up every wash or every other wash, or as a quick refresh before a show.

Trim Sauce
Water based trim gel that restores deep color on black, gray, and tan trim. Easy to use, wipes right off paint. The affordable maintenance option.
Shop Trim Sauce →Want to treat it and forget it for a season? Reach for Trim Shield. It is solvent based, and that is the whole reason it lasts. The solvent carries the conditioners deep into the plastic instead of just coating the top layer, so it conditions from within and seals the surface. It dries to a clean satin finish, not a flashy wet gloss, and it is non greasy and dry to the touch within minutes. Most dressings weaken and run off the next wash. Trim Shield does not. It seals the trim and rejects water, so with normal wash habits you get 3 to 4 months out of one application. A little goes a long way too, one bottle treats 14 to 16 cars.

Trim Shield (with Soft Foam Applicator)
Solvent based conditioner that penetrates deep, seals the trim, and holds a clean satin finish for 3 to 4 months. Treats 14 to 16 cars.
Shop Trim Shield →Never want to think about faded trim again? Reach for Beadlock Trim, our ceramic coating made for plastic. It uses SiO2 to cure into a hard, sacrificial barrier over the trim, which is what gives it the longest life and the best defense against the UV that fades trim in the first place. It restores the dark, new finish and holds it for up to a year. It is the most involved of the three to apply, but you do it once and move on.

Beadlock Trim Ceramic Coating
Ceramic trim coating that locks in a dark, new finish and shields plastic from UV and fading for up to a year. The longest lasting option.
Shop Beadlock Trim →Pro tip: To keep Beadlock Trim looking its best, hit it with Clutch, our ceramic spray sealant, about once a month. A quick coat reloads the ceramic protection, rejuvenates the plastic, and brings that deep color right back, so you are stacking protection instead of letting it wear down.
Clean The Trim First
This step matters no matter which product you picked. Old dressing, wax residue, and road film all block the new product from bonding, so the color will not come back evenly and it will not last. Spray an All Purpose Cleaner like Solution onto a microfiber towel and thoroughly wipe down the trim to strip off whatever is on there.
Wipe the trim down with Solution before you start
For Beadlock Trim this is required, and we take it one step further. After the APC, wipe the trim down with Throw Back to remove any leftover residue so the coating bonds to bare, clean plastic. Now the trim is prepped and ready.

Solution All Purpose Cleaner
Our go to APC for prepping trim. Strips old dressing and road film so the new product bonds to a clean surface.
Shop Solution →How To Apply It
The basic idea is the same for all three: get product onto the trim, let it set, then wipe off whatever did not absorb so there is nothing sitting on top to attract dust. The difference is how long you wait and how careful you need to be around the paint.
Trim Sauce and Trim Shield. Apply a good amount to your applicator and work it into the trim. Let it soak in, Trim Shield wants at least 10 minutes, then go back over the trim with a clean microfiber and lightly wipe off any excess so it dries even and dry to the touch. If your trim is really dry and neglected, a second coat of Trim Shield fills it back in. Both wipe right off if you get them on the paint or glass, so there is no stress there.
Beadlock Trim. This one is a coating, so the process is a little more involved. Apply it to a small applicator pad and rub it vigorously into the trim. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to set. Take a clean microfiber and gently go over the trim to level the coating and pick up anything that did not absorb, so you are left with an even finish and no excess sitting on top. Then grab a second microfiber and wipe off any coating that overlapped onto your paint or glass before it hardens, so you do not leave a high spot.

Too Far Gone To Condition? Fade Out Is Coming
Conditioners and coatings bring faded trim back to life, but only when there is still color left to revive. Some trim is so sun damaged and oxidized that no dressing can save it. For that, we have something new on the way.
Fade Out is a trim dye. Instead of just conditioning what is left, it lays down real black pigment to re-dye the plastic, so even trim that is past the point of conditioning comes back dark and even. If you ran our old Trim Paint, this is its replacement, reworked and improved.
It is launching in the coming months. Keep an eye out, and we will let you know the second it drops.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Skipping the cleaning step. If you lay conditioner or coating over old dressing, grime, or road film, it cannot bond to the plastic. It just sits on top and wears off fast. Wipe the trim down with an APC first, every time.
Using tire dressing on your trim. That is just slapping silicone on there. The trim soaks most of it up, and what is left does not last. Reach for a product made for trim instead.
Leaving excess product on top. Anything that does not absorb just sits there and grabs dust. Always go back with a clean microfiber and wipe it off.
Letting Beadlock Trim harden on your paint or glass. Trim Sauce and Trim Shield wipe off, but the coating will set into a high spot. Keep a second towel handy and clear the overlap right away.
Expecting the water based one to last for months. Trim Sauce is the maintenance product you top up often. For months of protection, that is what Trim Shield and Beadlock Trim are for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my black trim turn gray or chalky?
UV and sun exposure dry out the plastic and oxidize the surface. That oxidation is the chalky gray layer. The color is still in the trim, the surface just needs to be conditioned and protected so it stops happening.
Which one should I pick?
It comes down to how hands on you want to be. Trim Sauce if you wash often and do not mind a quick wipe to keep it fresh, and it is the easiest on the wallet. Trim Shield if you want to treat it and forget it for 3 to 4 months. Beadlock Trim if you never want to think about it again and want up to a year out of one application.
Will it just wash off the next time it rains?
Trim Sauce is water based, so it breaks down over time, which is why it is the maintenance option you top up often. Trim Shield is solvent based and seals the trim, so it holds through months of washes. Beadlock Trim is a ceramic coating that bonds and lasts up to a year.
Do I have to clean the trim first?
Yes, and it makes a big difference. Any old dressing or road film blocks the new product from working. A quick wipe with an All Purpose Cleaner like Solution is enough, and it is a required step before applying Beadlock Trim.
What if I get it on my paint or glass?
Trim Sauce and Trim Shield wipe right off, no harm done. Beadlock Trim is a coating and will harden, so keep a clean microfiber handy and wipe any overlap off right away before it sets, or you can leave a high spot.
Can I use these on gray or tan trim, not just black?
Yes. Trim Sauce restores the natural rich color whether your trim is black, gray, or tan, and Trim Shield and Beadlock Trim bring back and protect that dark, new look as well.
Can I use more than one together?
Yes, and it is a great way to keep it looking fresh. If you run Trim Shield as your base, go over it with Trim Sauce to brighten it back up once a month or every other wash, totally up to you. If you run Beadlock Trim, use Clutch to maintain it and sauce the color back up. The base handles protection, the topper keeps it crisp.
Can I use Clutch on my trim?
Yes. Clutch helps rejuvenate the color, and it is super versatile, so you can use it on paint, wheels, glass, and trim. It falls right between Trim Sauce and Trim Shield: a little more durable than Trim Sauce since it is ceramic based, but not solvent based, so it will not last as long as Trim Shield.
Final Thoughts
Faded trim is one of the easiest fixes on the whole car, and it makes a bigger difference than almost anything else. Pick the product that matches how hands on you want to be. Trim Sauce to maintain, Trim Shield for the season, Beadlock Trim to lock it in for a year. Clean the trim first, apply, then wipe off the excess, and that dark, new look comes right back.
Our usual move at the shop is Trim Shield or Beadlock Trim for the base, then Trim Sauce as the quick topper between washes. You get long term protection and that just detailed look all the time.
